Lance Bass posted a photograph to his Instagram account this afternoon confirming his engagement to actor/model Michael Turchin. The couple have been together since December 2011. Rumors of the couple’s engagement broke out on Twitter this morning when Turchin tweeted that he was the “happiest guy in the world”.

Bass proposed to Turchin with a black diamond band while in New Orleans just a week after reuniting with N’sync at the MTV Video Music Awards. Prior to the proposal, Bass sent a text to Turchin’s parents asking for permission.
Congratulations to Lance and Michael! I wonder what their wedding will be like…

Welcome to the debut post for Music Monday! Every Monday I will post a blog about a musician I have never heard before. I will listen to them for the first time and post my opinions.

This Monday I have decided to feature Macklemore. I have heard many things about Macklemore over the past year especially in regards to his song “Thrift Shop” and yet I have somehow still managed to avoid actually listening to him. However, after seeing his face on the cover of this week’s Rolling Stone I just simply could not ignore him anymore. I HAD to give him a try. If he’s on Rolling Stone than he must be good, right?

When I first heard “Thrift Shop” it was through a lyric video on YouTube. I couldn’t help but laugh and take it as a joke. The fact that people seriously love this song is mind boggling to me. I felt like my IQ was dropping every minute I continued to listen to it. Just in the first 45 seconds one of the main lines is “Walk up to the club like ‘What up? I got a big cock.”” Seriously? He couldn’t come up with something more creative to say? Lame. The rest of the song doesn’t get much better. It’s basically just about some guy that buys stuff from a thrift shop to wear to clubs. He’s kind of embarrassed by it but he still tries to look cool. Honestly, who cares?

I thought the music video for Thrift Shop would have to be at least interesting, so I gave that a try too.

The music video didn’t disappoint me at all. It was every bit as fun and light as I expected it to be. The second time hearing the song was much better. It is a catchy tune and I can see more of why people like it. Macklemore’s got talent even if his lyrics don’t exactly do him much justice. When I listen to his music without paying as close attention the lyrics I enjoy it more, or at least in the case of “Thrift Shop” I do.

I thought after hearing “Thrift Shop” twice that if Macklemore had a more serious song I would enjoy him more. A friend of mine suggested I listen to “Same Love”, which I hear is one of his newest singles. My first impression is that this song must have something to do with same sex relationships with a title like that. That alone makes me believe this song will probably be a bit slower, more serious than “Thrift Shop” was.

I was completely right in my speculation. Macklemore’s “Same Love” is a serious anthem to same-sex couples. I appreciate the more serious side of Macklemore singing about a hot topic/big debate issue that he is clearly passionate about. The lyrics here give the song it’s real strength and are capable of bringing about a major change and influence in American culture, which may be the reason Macklemore is featured on the cover of Rolling Stone this week.

The video for Macklemore’s “Same Love” is equally powerful showing gender stereotypes and roles preconceived from childhood, religion, and the questioning of tradition and sexuality. It pushes the boundaries by boldly featuring two men that are not only engaged in a relationship, but that are also shown getting legally married, a topic of controversy in today’s society.

Overall I think that Macklemore is a very talented musician. I hope he does more serious songs like “Same Love” though as that is what really shows his strength as not only an artist, but a person. I’ll definitely continue to listen to Macklemore and look forward to his new music in the future.
